AUTUMN

Getting out in Nature

Autumn is a time of great change; we see it all around us. The leaves changing colour and falling. Ripened fruits being gathered, or falling unpicked to be found by a grateful animal. Nights are drawing in and the chill becomes more noticeable. Before we know it, sandals are long forgotten winter shoes and boots have made their way to the front of the wardrobe – or in my case the shoe shop that is our hallway, as we our thoughts begin to drift towards Christmas.

This is a period of slowing down, a time to notice change around us, before we withdraw into the winter months, with log fires, blankets and cups of hot chocolate. There are beautiful shades of burnt orange and gold around, the appearance of red spotted toadstools – not to be eaten, and, in the chill of bright early morning walks, the dew making spider’s webs visible for all to see.

This is not a time to be sad that summer has finished, but a time to get out in nature and experience the wonders of the natural world. Take a step out of doing and into being. Dig out the walking boots and explore. Or perhaps just sit on a bench in the garden or park, wrap up in a blanket, and notice what you see hear and smell – it won’t be here for long.
